Imperial Rd

Imperial Drive is maintained and operated by the Ministry of Transportation and connects to two City of Vancouver streets: West 29th Avenue at the south end and Discovery Street at the north end.

Characteristics

Imperial Drive has 2 lanes (with centre line). It has no street lighting. The road was repaved in 2014 and made wider.

Connections

The road connects to local streets on both ends (no centre line) with street lighting. The connection to the south (W 29th Ave) is a designated bike route with a traffic circle and several speed bumps for traffic calming.

The speed limit is 50km/h.

There are no speed measurements publicly available. Observations suggest that speeding may be common.

Connections

The speed limits on the connecting streets are 30km/h to the south (W 29th Ave) and 50km/h in the north (Discovery Dr).

There is no pedestrian infrastructure along Imperial Rd.

There are no Pacific Spirit Park trails parallel to Imperial Rd. There are 5 Pacific Spirit Park trails meeting the road.

Imperial Rd has no street lighting. It is difficult for pedestrian or runner to see the road at night. When motor vehicles are passing the lighting is bright; when they are gone, a person on foot needs their eyes to readjust to complete darkness.

Connections

The connecting City street at the south end (West 29th Ave.) has a sidewalk on the north side, the connecting City street at the north end (Discovery St.) has sidewalks on both the east and west sides.

Imperial Rd has no cycling infrastructure.

Imperial Rd has no street lighting. It is difficult for cyclists to see the road at night, especially given the contrasting brightness of motor vehicle lights and bike lights. When motor vehicles are passing the lighting is bright; when they are gone, a cyclist’s eyes need to readjust to the relative darkness.

Connections

The connection to the south (W 29th Ave) is a designated bike route with typical for Vancouver 30km/h speed limit and traffic calming features.

While there are no direct measurements of traffic volumes available, measurements at either end can be taken as a proxy as there is no way to turn off. The 2008 count was conducted at Discovery Dr and is likely a good proxy for traffic on Imperial Dr as it is the only connecting option with no other destinations. The 2002 count was conducted on W 29th Ave and also connects to homes in the neighborhood and a park entrance. Traffic through W 29th Ave to those destinations may not have gone through Imperial Dr, and traffic through Imperial Dr to these destinations may not show up in the W 29th Ave traffic count.
